Croatia-based company Lürssen Design Center Kvarner is leading a consortium of 14 partners from across Europe to design and construct a hydrogen-powered passenger ship set to navigate the Adriatic Sea.

With a total project value of €18.9 million, supported by €13.5 million in funding from the European Union’s “Horizon Europe” program, the endeavor marks a significant leap towards sustainable maritime transportation.

The primary objective of the ZEAS project is to develop and deploy a cutting-edge hydrogen-powered passenger vessel, showcasing a climate-neutral fuel system. By harnessing hydrogen as a clean energy source, the initiative aims to demonstrate the feasibility and viability of zero-emission maritime transport, aligning with the European Union’s ambitious climate goals and commitment to decarbonization.

At the heart of the project lies the utilization of hydrogen as a fuel for propulsion, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels. The hydrogen-powered passenger ship will incorporate advanced technologies for hydrogen storage, distribution, and utilization, paving the way for emissions-free maritime travel. Additionally, the development of a digital twin system will enable efficient management and monitoring of the vessel’s propulsion system, ensuring optimal performance and maintenance.

The successful realization of the ZEAS project holds the promise of revolutionizing the maritime industry by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating environmental impact. By showcasing the viability of hydrogen-powered vessels, the initiative not only contributes to cleaner air and water in the Adriatic Sea but also sets a precedent for sustainable shipping practices globally. Furthermore, the establishment of hydrogen filling stations along the shore enhances infrastructure for future hydrogen-powered vessels, fostering the transition towards a hydrogen economy.

As the ZEAS project progresses over the next four years, stakeholders are poised to overcome challenges and realize the vision of a hydrogen-powered passenger ship sailing the Adriatic Sea. With collaborative efforts from industry partners, research institutions, and governmental organizations, the project sets sail towards a future where sustainable shipping practices are the norm, paving the way for cleaner, greener oceans and a more sustainable planet.
