Elogen, a member of the GTT group, has contracted with CrossWind, a Shell and Eneco venture for the development of the Hollandse Kust Noord (HKN) offshore wind project, to create a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzer with a capacity of 2.5 MW.

First, engineering will be done, then fabrication, and finally topside integration. In 2025, off the coast of the Netherlands, Elogen will erect a PEM electrolyzer, which will transform green electricity generated on-site into green hydrogen, making the project more resilient to fluctuations in power output.

The HKN offshore wind project places a premium on creativity; its ultimate goal is to store energy produced in abundance by renewable sources and release it when demand for electricity is low. CrossWind has identified five major developments that can help mitigate the intermittent nature of renewable energy. One of these is the installation of a hydrogen production unit, which can generate hydrogen on-site, store it, and then convert it back into electricity when needed.
