The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is spearheading a transformative initiative to support South Africa’s transition to green energy.
Commissioned by the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI), the CSIR is undertaking a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) for the Boegoebaai Port, Special Economic Zone (SEZ), and Namakwa Region in the Northern Cape.
The primary objective of this 18 to 24-month study, conducted in collaboration with the Northern Cape Economic Development, Trade, and Investment Promotion Agency (NCEDA) and Transnet National Ports Authority, is to assess the feasibility of developing the port and SEZ. This initiative aligns with global efforts to foster a green hydrogen economy and promote energy decarbonization.
The proposed green hydrogen hub aims to harness South Africa’s abundant renewable energy resources, particularly in the Northern Cape, to produce and export green hydrogen on a global scale. By leveraging advanced environmental assessment techniques, the CSIR seeks to integrate sustainability principles into the development of the port and SEZ.
The establishment of a green hydrogen hub holds significant promise for South Africa, offering opportunities for economic growth, job creation, and environmental sustainability. Through the export of green hydrogen, the country can position itself as a key player in the global renewable energy market while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
