According to a joint declaration issued by the governors of the three coal districts in the Czech Republic, the regions intend to lead Central Europe in the development of hydrogen technology.

In the joint memorandum, Moravian-Silesian, “steck,” and Karlovarsk reiterate their intention to transform into “hydrogen valleys” by working together to explore hydrogen’s potential.

Instead of being an energy source, hydrogen is a technique for storing electricity that creates the gas by splitting water into its component parts, hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen can also be utilised to generate power, in addition to being used in industry and transportation.

The coal-mining regions of the country have the potential to become leaders in the development of hydrogen technologies in Central Europe, according to Czech Environment Minister Petr Hladk (KDU-SL, EPP).

The mining regions rely on EU funding, particularly the Just Transition Fund and the Modernization Fund, to carry out their hydrogen ambitions.
