Wales & West Utilities have committed to essential hydrogen research aimed at reducing carbon emissions in industrial and commercial sectors across Wales and the southwest of England.

This initiative, in collaboration with infrastructure solutions company Costain, seeks to integrate hydrogen into the energy mix for businesses that need high temperatures and cannot solely rely on electrification.

The research focuses on determining how a hydrogen blend can help industrial and commercial gas users transition to lower carbon emissions. This is a significant part of Wales & West Utilities’ efforts to supply greener fuel to industries requiring high energy outputs.

The study will contribute to the UK’s net zero goals, including the target of achieving 10GW of hydrogen production capacity by 2030. By investigating the role of hydrogen and blending solutions within the gas network, the research aims to provide evidence to support these national objectives.

Understanding Market Needs

The project will assess the current understanding within the market about hydrogen refueling and preferred decarbonization methods, like Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage (CCUS) or using a hydrogen network. It will also map out users geographically to identify those needing extra support during the transition.

Matthew Hindle, Head of Net Zero and Sustainability at Wales & West Utilities, stated that the company owns and maintains over 35,000km of pipes, much of which can be repurposed for hydrogen. This will help 7.5 million homes and businesses operate more cost-effectively and efficiently using hydrogen.

Gap Hindle emphasized that the study aims to increase awareness of hydrogen and provide critical evidence for its inclusion as a low-carbon alternative to natural gas. The collaboration with Costain will be key to delivering this essential project.

Laura Hughes, Energy Sector Director at Costain, highlighted the need for clean fuels to meet growing energy demands. Integrating hydrogen into the gas network will be crucial for providing clean, reliable energy by 2050. Costain’s experience in reducing carbon emissions positions them well to support Wales & West Utilities in implementing fuel-switching plans.

This study is part of wider decarbonization efforts by Wales & West Utilities in partnership with Costain. It includes exploring the potential integration of hydrogen refueling stations within the existing gas network to promote hydrogen use in transport.
