The Portuguese Agency for Investment and Foreign Trade (AICEP) has granted national interest status to DH2 Energy’s green hydrogen production project.

The VVR Green project’s Potential National Interest (PIN) status supports investments deemed of “special interest for Portugal due to their economic factors and positive impact.”

DH2’s production plant will be located in Vila Velha de Ródão, Castelo Branco. Its initial capacity is 35MW of electrolysis and 49MWp of solar photovoltaic. In its second phase, the facility could be expanded to 75MW of hydrogen production.

Up to 1,650 tonnes per year of hydrogen will be produced in VVR Green’s initial phase.

“We are very satisfied and grateful for the recognition that comes with being granted PIN status for our VVR Green project,” claimed Nuno Gonçalves, the Director of DH2 Energy Portugal.

Gonçalves explained, “This initiative will contribute to the decarbonization and revitalization of the economy in the region.”

In July 2024, DH2 announced its 35MW green hydrogen production plant in Aragon, Spain, had secured an Integrated Environmental Authorisation, essentially giving the green light for development. Anticipated to begin production next year (2025), the Hysencia plant became one of the first winners in the European renewable hydrogen auction in April 2024.
