District heating technology using hydrogen

Korea District Heating Corporation is developing district heating technology using hydrogen.

Last year, Hannan signed a mutual cooperation MOU with Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction on the practical use of technologies for the domestic technology-based eco-friendly hydrogen turbine cogeneration plant for carbon neutrality.

Through the agreement, Hannan will cooperate for the development of eco-friendly hydrogen turbines for carbon neutrality by providing test beds for the demonstration of eco-friendly cogeneration plants, cooperating for the hydrogen turbine entities and efficient operation of the aging cogeneration gas turbines, and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction will cooperate in the field of Hannan’s “supply and entity of eco-friendly cogeneration hydrogen turbines” by successfully carrying out the development of hydrogen turbine technology.

Last year, Hannan signed an agreement with MPWK (MPW) and maintenance company (KEPCO KPS) to cooperate with hydrogen gas turbine entities. The agreement was carried out to sequentially replace the facilities so that hydrogen can be mixed with natural gas used as fuel for gas turbines, a key facility for cogeneration facilities, and to produce facilities that can burn hydrogen in the future.

MPW, an agreement agency, is a gas turbine manufacturer and has high technology by cooperating with Intermountain in the United States and Vattenfall in Europe for the use of hydrogen in gas turbines. In addition, KEPCO KPS, as a company specializing in gas turbine maintenance, is expected to contribute to achieving the carbon-neutral goal of Korea Energy Corporation through hydrogen conversion of gas turbine fuel.

Meanwhile, last year, Korea Heating Corporation conducted design and technical support for Korea’s first collective energy project that utilizes by-product hydrogen in Ulsan’s hydrogen pilot city to lay the foundation for regional heating projects using hydrogen.

Through this, it plans to supply heating heat and electric energy produced by hydrogen fuel cells this year to national rental houses in the Ulsan Hydrogen Demonstration City.

In particular, considering the characteristics of fuel cells that generate low-temperature heat, the company plans to apply the latest regional heating technologies such as “fourth-generation district heating” technology that supplies low-temperature heat than existing district heating, flexible pipes that are easier to install and manage and have higher safety than existing heat transport pipes, and smart meters that optimize the supply of generation heat energy by utilizing IoT technology.
