Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co., a South Korean power plant builder, announced on Thursday that it has teamed up with local businesses and the local government to develop a hydrogen-fueled gas turbine for electricity generation.
Doosan Heavy and its partners plan to convert a gas turbine from a liquefied natural gas (LNG) combined cycle power plant in Ulsan, 414 kilometers southeast of Seoul, into a 270-megawatt hydrogen gas turbine by 2027, according to the power plant builder.
The Ulsan Metropolitan Government, two local power providers, Korea East-West Power Co. and Korea Midland Power Co., and SK Gas Ltd. are all involved in the project.
Compared to current combined cycle power plants propelled by LNG, power plants fueled by hydrogen can reduce carbon dioxide emissions, according to Doosan Heavy.
According to Doosan Heavy, the global hydrogen-fueled gas turbine market is expected to reach 40 trillion won (US$36 billion) by 2030.
The power plant developer developed the world’s fifth 270-megawatt gas turbine in 2019.
