Drillmec to invest €35M in hydrogen fuel sector

Drillmec, a Piacenza-based Oil & Gas company that is part of the Indian infrastructure behemoth MEIL Group, has decided to invest over 35 million euros in the energy transition, including initiatives in hydrogen production using the most advanced technologies available, such as electrolysis, pyrolysis, and the design and construction of CO2 capture and storage systems, as well as geothermal energy.

This was determined at a board meeting by Drillmec, the parent firm of MEIL (Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Limited), a Hyderabad-based company that has joined the hydrogen fuel market through its group company, Drillmec SpA (Italy), according to a press release issued here on Friday. In this regard, Drillmec has established Idrogena, a start-up committed to the research and industrial manufacturing of a pyrolytic converter for ultra-clean hydrogen generation.

Through pyrolysis, the converter created by the Idrogena team with professionals with over thirty years of expertise in process engineering will produce hydrogen without polluting the environment. A significant step forward in the energy transition, combining people’s safety, environmental protection, and economic accessibility.

“According to Simone Trevisani, CEO of Drillmec SpA, “We are glad to announce this new endeavor in our nation, which is consistent with our history, which is to invent and create responsible and safe technologies capable of incorporating energy, social, and environmental concerns.”

With the converter, hydrogen may be produced in a capillary fashion at the destination, lowering transportation costs and overcoming the low energy content of hydrogen, which poses a storage and transit difficulty.

“According to Simone Trevisani, this technology fits into the natural gas value chain, compensating for the lack of a hydrogen distribution network, which is now the biggest barrier to broad deployment. Mr. Srinivas Bommareddy, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Drillmec S.p.A., remarked, “I congratulate the team on the new project and wish them all the best in the rapidly expanding Green Hydrogen technology.”

The low-cost development of this technology will allow it to work at low pressure, have compact dimensions, and be safe to use with no training. He stated that because it is powered by renewable energy, it will not utilize polluting catalysts, will not generate trash, and will produce enough for a variety of applications, including industrial and local public usage.
