Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) recently announced a 2.5-megawatt (MW) alkaline electrolyzer project tender. This project involves the electrolyzer’s design, supply, installation, and commissioning on a turnkey basis. An electrolyzer uses electricity to split water molecules, producing hydrogen.

According to a DEWA notice, the final date for submitting completed tender applications is set for 11:00 am (Dubai Time) on 18 September 2024. This initiative builds on DEWA’s ongoing efforts in hydrogen production. DEWA operates a 1.25 MW Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzer powered by solar energy to produce 20 kg/hour of green hydrogen. This pilot project, initiated in May 2021, is located at the Solar Park’s R&D Centre and was launched in collaboration with Expo 2020 Dubai and Siemens Energy.

Alkaline vs. PEM Electrolysers

Alkaline and PEM electrolyzers are the primary technologies dominating the global green hydrogen production market. A recent report by Clean Energy Associates, published in February 2024, highlights the significance of these technologies in addressing the growing demand for green hydrogen.
