For the development of a green hydrogen and derivatives mega-project to be located at the Suez Canal Economic Zone, the “Green Fuel Alliance” consortium, led by EDF Renewables, and Zero Waste signed a Framework Agreement with the Ministry of Electricity, the General Authority for Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE), and the Infrastructure and Utilities Sub Fund of The Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE).
The whole project’s foundation is a mix of over 2GW renewable wind and solar energy sources that will be put into place in stages with the goal of powering a 700 MW electrolyser that will produce green hydrogen and ammonia.
The project will help fulfill the need for green ammonia and hydrogen needed to decarbonize the power, fertilizer, and transportation sectors. The project’s first phase, which is expected to be completed by 2026, will produce 22,000 tons of green hydrogen annually for the synthesis of ammonia. The Agreement states that by 2030, the facility will increase its capacity to produce 80,000 tons of green hydrogen annually.
In order to maximize the mix of wind and solar energy, the consortium has started the project conceptual design.
