EDP moves more quickly with its green hydrogen aspirations in Spain. The environmental processes for the two significant projects that the company, led by Miguel Stilwell and Ana Paula Marques in Spain, is currently working on in our nation Los Barrios in Cádiz and the Hydrogen Valley of Asturias in Aboo have already been started.
Practically the entire investment that the business intends to make in this technology will go into both projects. Of the 500 million they had budgeted in their strategic plan, they will earn 450 million overall between the two projects. In particular, the company has just filed the paperwork for the construction of 130 MW of electrolysers at the Los Barrios thermal plant, a 195 million euro investment. The processing will be carried out in accordance with the Junta de Andaluca’s Accelerator Unit’s rules.
The European Commission has deemed this project strategic and included it in the so-called Important Project of Common European Interest. It follows the proposal made for Aboo with 295 million in funding (IPCEI). It has also been suggested that the IDAE award aid (Institute for Diversification and Energy Saving).
There are two key steps in the documentation that was presented for this environmental procedure. The first adds 130 MW to the total capacity of the electrolysers, and it is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2026. If market conditions are good, the second phase of the project will have 400 MW more electrolyzer electricity and be operational by the end of 2030.
The first two PV projects to be built in the Netherlands have begun construction by German solar developer Kronos Solar EDPR.
