EDP presented its plan to convert the thermal power station in the Asturian valley into an Abono green hydrogen plant to the European Commission. The project calls for the startup of 100 megawatts (MW) of electrolyzers, with the potential to grow to 500 MW if the market permits.
The idea is “practical,” according to the corporation, and calls for “maintaining industrial activity on the site.” Jyri Ylkanen, the EU official in charge of policies for the hydrogen sector of DG Grow, visited the site. . Ylkanen was curious about the specifics of the energy firm proposal, which the European Commission recently determined to be of community interest due to its strategic importance in the energy transition.
The visit took place as part of a program this week about decarbonization and renewable hydrogen that was put together by the European Commission, the Asturian Energy Foundation (FAEN), and the Principality of Asturias’ Ministry of Industry, Employment, and Economic Promotion.
