EDP, TechnipFMC, and other research partners are collaborating to build a conceptual technical and economic feasibility assessment for the BEHYOND project, a new offshore system for green hydrogen synthesis from offshore wind energy.
The study will incorporate novel integrations of equipment for producing and processing green hydrogen, as well as infrastructure for transporting it to the coast. The objective is to develop a novel approach that can be standardized and applied globally, enabling large-scale hydrogen production.
BEHYOND brings together two global energy players, EDP and TechnipFMC, as well as the CEiiA research center, WavEC Offshore Renewables, and the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN). The collaborative development will enable the consortium partners to establish a global presence in the hydrogen value chain by establishing new business models and engineering solutions, as well as new products and services.
This partnership will expand Portugal’s cooperation with Norway and boost Portugal’s competitiveness in the growing “blue economy.” The BEHYOND project was selected for funding by the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism’s Blue Growth Programme (EEA Grants).
EDP, through its subsidiaries EDP NEW and EDP Inovaço, serves as the project coordinator and is responsible for the execution of several phases, including a strategic assessment of the offshore wind-to-hydrogen market, the definition of viable business cases, and the development of a technology roadmap to commercial maturity.
