EnBW is steadily expanding its portfolio onshore wind energy. With the purchase of existing wind turbines in Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg and the further construction of its own projects , the company plans to raise its capacity in Germany by nearly 90 megawatts in 2020.

EnBW has recently acquired 20 wind turbines in Saxony-Anhalt, with a capacity of 36 megawatts (MW). The company strives to repower these wind power plants in the medium term by replacing older wind turbines with more new and efficient ones.

Furthermore, EnBW has also purchased another 18 MW wind farm in Brandenburg. In addition, EnBW is building its own projects in Germany in 2020 which will have a total capacity of 33.5 MW and be placed into service by the end of the year.

“The expansion of onshore wind power is a fundamental component of our corporate strategy. Despite the continued difficult situation on the market, we will be able to increase our onshore wind power capacities to well over 900 MW during this year through the development of our own projects and via organic growth.”

Dirk Güsewell, responsible for the expansion of wind power at EnBW.

EnBW claims that the expansion goals set by the German government to cover 65 per cent of gross electricity demand with renewable energy by 2030 would not be accomplished without the implementation of additional measures.

“The bitter reality is that while legislators assume that the approval process lasts three or seven months, it actually takes five times as long. To finally close the gap between the ambitious climate targets and the actual development of the Energiewende in practice, we need courage and resolve from our politicians.”

The onshore market, as in previous years, did not gain real momentum in the first half of 2020 either. By the end of June only 186 wind turbines with a capacity of 587 megawatts had been commissioned in Germany.
