Essar has contracted Vertex Hydrogen to provide 280MW+ of hydrogen within the terms of a negotiated deal.
New hydrogen-powered furnaces were supplied to Essar in August, and this hydrogen will be utilized to help decarbonize their existing production facilities.
As part of the HyNet Consortium, Vertex, a joint venture between Essar and Progressive Energy, is building the United Kingdom’s first large-scale, low-carbon hydrogen production hub.
Initially, this will produce 1GW of hydrogen and capture some 1.8 million tonnes of carbon per annum. It is projected that Vertex will supply about 4GW of low carbon hydrogen by 2030.
The company is executing on plans to become the first low-carbon refinery in the UK by the end of the decade.
