EU’s Pledge to Transform Brazil’s Hydrogen Landscape

European Commission commits the European Union’s backing for an extensive hydrogen project in Brazil, signaling a strategic step towards fostering clean energy initiatives.

The ambitious venture, part of the two billion euro Global Gateway investment, envisions the establishment of the Green Energy Park in the Brazilian State of Piaui, boasting a colossal 10 GW production facility for clean hydrogen and ammonia.

The primary objective of the Green Energy Park is to revolutionize the hydrogen value chain by creating a substantial production hub for clean hydrogen and ammonia. The project aligns with the European Union’s commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions globally and aims to cater to the growing demand for clean fuels in Europe.

The Green Energy Park is set to leverage cutting-edge technology for the production of clean hydrogen and ammonia. Once produced, these energy carriers will be transported to the Croatian island of Krk. From Krk, hydrogen will embark on a journey to serve industrial off-takers in southeast Europe, facilitating a seamless and efficient distribution network.

Ammonia emerges as a crucial element in the project, serving as a viable solution for storing and transporting hydrogen. The potential of ammonia in facilitating emission-free fuel cells and turbines positions it as a key player in the transition towards sustainable energy practices.

The staged development program of the Green Energy Park is slated to commence in early 2024, extending through 2030. With a substantial investment exceeding 2.5 billion euros, the project aims to source, import, and distribute 10 million tonnes of renewable ammonia annually. The successful realization of this venture will mark a significant milestone in Europe’s pursuit of sustainable hydrogen solutions.
