EWE GASSPEICHER plans hydrogen projects with PLEXOS

EWE GASSPEICHER GmbH, a German gas storage facility operator, has signed a new deal with worldwide software vendor Energy Exemplar to help them with their substantial decarbonization activities.

EWE GASSPEICHER GmbH is a subsidiary of EWE AG, a European energy and telecommunications firm that provides electricity, gas, heat, grid, and telecommunication services.

To promote the decarbonization and electrification of the sector, the company has developed a new business area for Hydrogen production (cities, steel, and heavy industry). When it came to incorporating hydrogen into their company, Energy Exemplar’s PLEXOS software was chosen to enable transparency and a single language amongst stakeholders.

“One of the most important components of reaching climate neutrality is green hydrogen.” We need to reduce its existing complexity in order to encourage its use across the whole energy value chain. To that aim, we’ll employ PLEXOS at EWE to provide our clients with an easily comprehensible transmission path to net-zero emissions using green hydrogen. With PLEXOS, we can capture the whole energy value chain while also focusing on each customer individually, regardless of their market position. As a result, PLEXOS can assist Germany in achieving carbon neutrality by 2045.” Tobias Moldenhauer, Head of Hydrogen at EWE GASSPEICHER GmbH’s Business Unit “Large Scale Storage and Hydrogen”

Over the last few months, a modeling team inside the business development department has been formed to design and implement hydrogen projects using PLEXOS. The program enables the team to digitally duplicate energy markets while taking into account restrictions like local legislation, as well as develop models and run scenarios to identify the best solutions for EWE GASSPEICHER GmbH’s clients.

As a result, the energy modeling platform will aid EWE GASSPEICHER GmbH’s Hydrogen business in a variety of ways, including strategic project identification by comparing project alternatives and technology to market scenarios and presenting economic benefits and drawbacks.

“As hydrogen continues to dominate energy discussions, we are thrilled to welcome EWE GASSPEICHER GmbH as a PLEXOS user.” EWE GASSPEICHER GmbH is ideally positioned to play a leadership role in Europe’s energy transformation, thanks to its decades of gas knowledge, infrastructure, and skilled personnel. Modeling green Hydrogen is becoming increasingly relevant with the advent of renewables, the need to reduce dependency on fossil fuels, and the objective of ensuring a sustainable and secure energy supply. We look forward to assisting EWE GASSPEICHER GmbH with the deployment and training of our PLEXOS software.” Michael Schneider, Energy Exemplar’s Senior Vice President and Head of EMEA
