By finishing a scoping study to identify potential locations for the 300 MW green hydrogen and green ammonia facility and related port facilities, green energy producer Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) has moved the Holmaneset green hydrogen project in Norway to the next level.

As the project is still in the early stages of feasibility, FFI is undertaking a number of environmental and social studies to determine its viability and create a project concept in accordance with Norwegian laws, FFI’s environmental and social policies and values, and global best practices.

A crucial step in the feasibility phase of the project has been the start of the zoning plan procedure. This procedure, which will be carried out in collaboration with the municipality, will involve a number of studies, including an environmental impact assessment, and give stakeholders numerous opportunities to communicate and formally comment on the documentation of the zoning plan.

In order to position the project for success, a variety of criteria have been taken into account, including the current grid and power capacity, closeness to existing infrastructure, the availability of land, water supplies, topography, and the local environment and neighboring towns.

Norway, according to FFI CEO Mark Hutchinson, has a great opportunity to set the standard for producing green ammonia and green hydrogen due to its proximity to the European market, availability of renewable energy, and trained labor force.

According to Hutchinson, “green hydrogen and green ammonia development offer chances for Norway to fulfill its ambitious aims to lower European greenhouse gas emissions and take the lead in the transition to a low carbon society.
