Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) and AGL Energy are investigating the possibility of generating green hydrogen at two coal-fired power plants in New South Wales’ Hunter Valley.

An agreement has been signed between Fortescue Metals Group’s green energy business and the Australian utility to conduct a 12-month feasibility study at the site of the Liddell and Bayswater nuclear power stations.

An initial 250 MW of new wind and solar power will be used to produce 30,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year as part of the initiative. Gigawatt-scale electrolysers, powered by new wind and solar and supported by new pumped hydro and batteries, may be possible in the future. FFI, AGL, and other parties will produce the clean energy.

Additionally, as part of the MoU, FFI and AGL will look into the possibility of using green hydrogen to power co-located industries, as well as exporting it.
