The first liquid hydrogen demonstration project in Korea gets underway in Gangwon-do. In this demonstration project, gaseous hydrogen derived from liquefied natural gas (LNG) is frozen and liquefied, stored, and transported before being used for hydrogen-powered ships and drones.

At a cryogenic temperature of -253 degrees or less, hydrogen liquefies. Since the pressure is substantially lower than that of hydrogen gas, hydrogen may be transported and stored without changing its condition.

Gaseous hydrogen has a bigger impact on energy usage than liquid hydrogen at the moment since the hydrogen economy in Korea is still in its infancy. The requirement for liquid hydrogen, which is more efficient at storage and transportation than gaseous hydrogen, is anticipated to rise in the coming years, according to the government.

For the liquid hydrogen demonstration project, the government accordingly created a special zone for free regulation of the liquid hydrogen sector in a 251,045 square meter region that includes Gangneung and Donghae, Gangwon-do, in July 2020. The provincial administration anticipates that this project will provide other hydrogen-related initiatives like the development of infrastructure for the hydrogen pilot city and the building of a production plant a boost.
