German Aerospace Center progresses in hydrogen fuel technology with the opening of its BALIS project in Empfingen, Germany.

This venture aims to develop and test hydrogen fuel cell systems for various forms of transportation. These fuel cells have an output of about 1.5 megawatts and, while not yet commercially available, show promise for powering ships and possibly future aircraft.

Karsten Lemmer, a DLR Executive Board Member, emphasizes the critical role of the BALIS facility in bridging research and industry. Large-scale projects like BALIS facilitate the development of sustainable technologies by assessing their functionality and economic potential.

Particularly in aviation, transitioning fuel technologies from stable ground systems to aircraft systems is complex and time-consuming. BALIS provides a foundation for reliable advancements in aviation propulsion.
