Germany’s Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) issued a tender titled “Vehicle Refuelling Services – Errichtung und Betrieb von Wasserstofftankinfrastruktur” on June 19, 2024. The deadline for submission of tenders is July 18, 2024. This tender is crucial for advancing the hydrogen industry as it aims to develop a robust infrastructure for hydrogen refueling nationwide.

The main objective of this tender is to establish and operate hydrogen refueling stations, which are essential for the adoption of hydrogen-powered vehicles and the overall growth of the hydrogen economy in Germany. The project seeks to enhance the accessibility and convenience of hydrogen refueling, fostering a more sustainable transportation sector.

Key requirements for interested bidders include constructing and maintaining hydrogen refueling stations. These stations must comply with strict safety and efficiency standards, ensuring a reliable hydrogen supply to vehicles. The tender emphasizes the importance of using state-of-the-art technology to minimize environmental impact and maximize operational efficiency.

Technically, the hydrogen refueling stations must be capable of handling various pressure levels, typically 350 bar and 700 bar, to accommodate different types of hydrogen vehicles, from passenger cars to heavy-duty trucks. To ensure safe operations, the stations should also incorporate advanced safety features, including leak detection systems and emergency shutdown capabilities.

This tender, by facilitating the expansion of hydrogen refueling infrastructure, represents a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions in the transportation sector and achieving Germany’s climate goals. It also supports the broader adoption of hydrogen as a clean energy source, fostering innovation and economic growth within the hydrogen industry.
