The government has agreed to invest extensively in green hydrogen research and development. This is a significant boost for Groningen’s province, particularly the region near Eemshaven and Delfzijl. There will be a green hydrogen plant established there, and the development of green hydrogen, which has already begun slowly, will be accelerated.
A total of 500 million euros will be made available in the Netherlands for the development of green hydrogen. The funding comes from the National Growth Fund. Billions of dollars have been set aside for the revitalization of the Dutch economy.
The money will be distributed in many phases. A committee suggested that money be awarded or put aside for 28 bids in this round. One of these recommendations relates to the advancement of hydrogen technology.
“Hydrogen is very crucial to our economy.” The Netherlands is Europe’s second-largest player, producing 16.5 billion m3 per year. Green hydrogen generation must be expanded to preserve this position in a climate-neutral society. The National Growth Fund adds, “This initiative makes this feasible by releasing a tender for electrolysis facilities of at least 100 MW.”
Green power from offshore wind farms is converted into green hydrogen by the electrolyzers. These projects in Eemshaven and Delfzijl may now be expedited thanks to the funds, giving Groningen a leadership position in the hydrogen area.
