Green Hydrogen’s Future in Burgos Uncertain

The future of several energy projects in the province of Burgos hinges on the final route of hydrogen pipelines in the Iberian Peninsula. These pipelines need to link with local industrial centers, and the executive government must make the decision.

So far, the hydrogen sector has promised investments worth over 620 million euros in the province. This commitment underscores Burgos’ significant role in developing the green hydrogen economy. However, this potential will be boosted or hindered based on Burgos’ inclusion in the final map of Spain’s Hydrogen Backbone Network. The coming autumn weeks will be critical in determining whether the government decides that the major hydrogen pipelines will traverse Burgos, a province already leading in wind energy.

Optimism Despite Uncertainty

Despite the uncertainty, the hydrogen sector’s movements suggest optimism. Even before confirming the definitive map by Enagás, several projects worth hundreds of millions have started across the province. European funds back some of these projects and are in the advanced stages of planning and execution. Other initiatives are still waiting, and their future depends on the energy strategies set by Madrid and Europe for 2030 and 2040.

Focus on Renewable Energy

Most of the announced funds target hydrogen generation centers that use renewable wind and solar energy through electrolysis. Additionally, significant research is being conducted involving businesses and universities.

Key Project in Villalonquéjar

The most significant initiative is the Sener hydrogen and ammonia production plant in Villalonquéjar. This project received its Environmental Impact Declaration in August and eight-point-eight million euros in European aid. According to engineering forecasts, the plant will start becoming operational this year.

The project involves 150 million euros of investment in the Villalonquéjar industrial estate. It aims to reach 60 megawatts of electrolysis capacity to produce green ammonia for industrial use and hydrogen as fuel. This hydrogen will be distributed via a refueling station for truck, bus, and light transport fleets.

Potential Growth and Challenges

Burgos is poised to become a major player in the green hydrogen sector. However, the outcome heavily depends on strategic decisions regarding the routing of hydrogen pipelines. The province’s strong foundation in renewable energy sets a promising stage, but official confirmations and strategic alignments at the national and European levels will be decisive.
