H-TEC SYSTEMS realizes the first hydrogen project in western Switzerland with Groupe E. For this purpose, two H-TEC SYSTEMS ME450/1400 PEM electrolysers for the production of green hydrogen will be placed at the Schiffenen dam.
Starting in 2023, approximately 300 tons of green hydrogen will be produced annually using hydropower, which will subsequently be used primarily for the decarbonization of heavy traffic.
First hydrogen production plant in western Switzerland
The production plant at the Schiffenen dam is located in the canton of Fribourg and is the first plant of its kind in western Switzerland. The two PEM electrolysers are supplied with more than two megawatts of green energy by a rotary turbine of the dam. With regard to the delivery of the hydrogen to nearby filling stations, the location of the production plant near the A12 and A1 freeways is ideal. With the help of tankers, the hydrogen is transported by road to the filling stations.
The energy supplier Groupe E is starting a pilot project with the PEM electrolysers and is pleased to have found an experienced partner in H-TEC SYSTEMS. “With this project we are entering new territory. Both the constructive, open and transparent communication with H-TEC SYSTEMS as well as their experience with their own efficient PEM electrolyzer let us look confidently into the upcoming realization phase”, explains Urs Kröpfli, project manager of Groupe E.

Together with Groupe E, H-TEC SYSTEMS is entering the Swiss market for the first time. H-TEC SYSTEMS also praises the very collegial cooperation with Groupe E and is pleased to be a part of this sustainable venture of the energy company. “Due to the very cooperative and trustful collaboration already in the discussions of the past months, we have seen that we have found a very good partner in Groupe E for H-TEC SYSTEMS’ first project in Switzerland. We are pleased to realize an innovative project together with our customer at such a picturesque location as the Schiffenen dam,” explains Alexander Detke, Sales Manager for the project.
