Hanwha Impact and Hanwha Power Systems have achieved a milestone by successfully operating a medium-to-large-scale gas turbine solely on 100% hydrogen fuel. This development, announced on December 20, signifies a major breakthrough in the realm of clean energy technology.
Hanwha’s demonstration involved increasing the hydrogen mixing ratio in an 80 MW medium-to-large gas turbine from 60% to 100%. This goes beyond the previous achievement in April 2023 when they demonstrated 60% hydrogen blending in the same turbine—a feat recognized as a world first. The process, termed “full hydrogen combustion,” eliminates the use of LNG, positioning hydrogen as the sole fuel for power generation.
During the 60% hydrogen turbine power generation test in April, Hanwha had already showcased a 22% reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions compared to LNG power generation. The recent full hydrogen combustion test further validates their commitment to environmental stewardship. Despite the challenges associated with the high flame temperature of hydrogen fuel, Hanwha’s technology efficiently controlled combustion conditions, resulting in low-pollution combustion without additional reduction devices.
The recent test marks a significant stride toward carbon-free and low-emission power generation. The CO2 concentration in the emissions during the turbine operation was an impressive 0.04%, demonstrating virtually zero carbon dioxide produced during the combustion process. Nitrogen oxide emissions, a common concern in hydrogen combustion, were confirmed to be below 9 ppm without the need for additional reduction devices.
Hanwha’s hydrogen turbine technology holds promise not only in the environmental realm but also economically. The technology is poised to play a crucial role in extending the life of aging turbines in existing power facilities. By applying this life extension technology to LNG gas turbines facing obsolescence, Hanwha aims to double the economic benefits, presenting a compelling case for the integration of hydrogen in the energy landscape.
As the world grapples with the imperative shift towards sustainable practices, Hanwha’s success in achieving full hydrogen combustion in gas turbines stands as a beacon of hope. The technology not only promises cleaner energy solutions but also opens avenues for the economic revitalization of existing infrastructure. Hanwha’s dedication to environmental responsibility positions them at the forefront of the clean energy revolution.
