Haßfurt has emerged as a beacon of innovation in hydrogen production and utilization.

Since 2016, Haßfurt’s municipal utility has been leveraging excess wind power to produce hydrogen through an electrolyzer. Collaborating with Siqens, a hydrogen infrastructure specialist, the city is now pioneering a commercial project to produce hydrogen directly from the gas network. This initiative, in partnership with renowned research institutions, signifies a significant step towards integrating hydrogen into mainstream energy systems.

Haßfurt’s energy landscape is characterized by a diverse mix of renewable sources, including solar, wind, and locally produced biogas. The patented electrochemical hydrogen separation technology (EHS) from Siqens enables efficient and cost-effective hydrogen production, further enhancing the city’s energy resilience.

The EHS process not only ensures high-purity hydrogen production but also demonstrates exceptional versatility by extracting hydrogen from various gas sources, including biogas and even noble gases like helium. Its robustness and efficiency make it a viable solution for municipalities aiming to enhance their renewable energy infrastructure.

Haßfurt’s success story serves as a model for other municipalities striving to transition towards sustainable energy systems. By achieving complete self-sufficiency in heat and electrical energy, Haßfurt showcases the potential of municipal energy efficiency management and smart metering to optimize renewable energy utilization and offer cost-effective solutions to consumers.

With almost two decades of pioneering efforts in the energy transition, Haßfurt stands as a testament to the transformative power of renewable energy. By embracing innovation and collaboration, the city continues to lead the way towards a cleaner, greener future, setting new standards for sustainability and resilience in the process.
