HDF Energy (Hydrogen de France), has officially commenced its operations in Ecuador. The official inauguration ceremony took place at the French Embassy in Quito on June 20, 2023.
The Dawn of Renewable Energy in Ecuador
As part of its growth strategy, HDF Energy’s venture into Ecuador marks a significant stride in the country’s transition to sustainable and renewable energy solutions. The launch event at the French Embassy was graced by the presence of key stakeholders, government officials, NGOs, investment banks, and distinguished guests, who witnessed HDF Energy’s commitment to aiding Ecuador’s pursuit of clean and consistent energy sources.
The occasion also provided a platform to formalize the recently signed memorandum of understanding between HDF Energy and CELEC EP (Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador), the state-owned company accountable for the generation and transmission of electricity in Ecuador. The aim of this MoU is to collaboratively explore opportunities for developing HDF Energy’s Renewstable hydrogen power plants in the country, including the mainland and the Galapagos Islands.
Harnessing the Power of Renewable Energy
Renowned for its abundant solar and wind resources, Ecuador is a treasure trove of renewable energy potential. HDF Energy aims to harness these natural assets to develop its Renewstable plants, designed to provide continuous, stable, and clean electricity around the clock. These plants, combining an intermittent renewable energy source with massive energy storage in the form of on-site green hydrogen, aim to meet the growing demands of local communities and industries (including oil and mining companies, and shrimp plants). The initiative aligns perfectly with Ecuador’s national energy goals.
Cristina Martin, HDF Energy Vice President for Latin America, expressed her delight over the company’s expansion into Ecuador. Martin highlighted their mission to offer innovative and sustainable energy solutions that drive economic growth. She also emphasized their eagerness to collaborate with CELEC EP and other local partners to actively participate in Ecuador’s energy transition while creating local job opportunities.
Echoing Martin’s sentiments, Fernando Santos Alvite, Minister of Energy of Ecuador, mentioned Ecuador’s dedication to enhancing its share of clean energy and attracting foreign investment to this traditionally hydrocarbon-based sector. Gonzalo Uquillas, Director General of CELEC EP, added that CELEC EP promotes the use of green hydrogen as an energy carrier to ensure stable power for the grid and achieve the climate targets set by the national government.
The launch of HDF Energy’s operations in Ecuador signifies a turning point in the country’s journey towards a sustainable energy future. This collaborative initiative not only aligns with the national renewable energy targets but also promises economic growth and job creation for local communities.
