Honda Motor has unveiled new efforts that make use of its fundamental technology, such as fuel cells.

Honda and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (Jaxa) are working together to develop a circulative renewable energy system on the lunar surface using fuel cell technology and high differential pressure water electrolysis.

Honda will integrate its fuel cell and water electrolysis technology, and the system will breakdown water while storing hydrogen and oxygen utilizing renewable energy sources. For the first time, NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (Sofia) verified the presence of water on the moon’s sunlit surface. The discovery suggests that water might be found all across the lunar surface, not just in cold, dark areas.

Honda technology will create power on the moon using hydrogen and oxygen, with the oxygen being utilized by humans on the lunar surface and the hydrogen being used as rocket fuel. Honda hopes to contribute to a variety of human activities on the lunar surface by constructing such a circulatory renewable energy system.
