Pedro Sánchez, the President of the Spanish Government, has reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to hydrogen as a strategic pillar of renewable energy, envisioning the nation as a leading hub in this burgeoning sector.

His remarks came during the European Hydrogen Congress (EHEC) at the Bilbao Exhibition Center, highlighting the pivotal role of renewable hydrogen in Spain’s journey towards achieving zero emissions.

President Sánchez emphasized Spain’s pioneering initiatives in green hydrogen production and its application in challenging sectors like transportation and industry, vital for decarbonization efforts. These endeavors underscore Spain’s dedication to the energy transition, aligning with the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan’s goal to generate 81% of electricity from renewables by 2030.

Javier Brey, President of the Spanish Hydrogen Association (AeH2), echoed President Sánchez’s sentiments while acknowledging the sector’s rapid evolution and significant challenges. Brey stressed the importance of updating strategies to meet EU objectives and emphasized the need for enhanced hydrogen-focused education and international collaboration.

Inigo Fernández de Mesa, Vice President of CEOE, underscored hydrogen’s global potential, particularly in facilitating the decarbonization of complex sectors and bolstering EU energy security. Additionally, hydrogen presents an opportunity for reindustrialization, promising improved job prospects, productivity, and quality of life.

The inauguration of the EHEC highlighted the Basque Country’s pivotal role in hydrogen development, underscoring the region’s commitment to sustainability. European Commissioner for Climate Action, Wopke Hoestra, affirmed hydrogen’s critical role in achieving climate neutrality, signaling a collective commitment to sustainable growth and innovation.
