In a major step towards advancing the green hydrogen agenda in Morocco, Chariot Green Hydrogen, a subsidiary of the Africa-focused transitional energy group Chariot, has joined hands with Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) and Oort Energy to expand their partnership for testing green hydrogen production in the country.
The collaboration aims to construct, commission, and operate an electrolyser pilot project, along with fostering skills development and training within the sector. The pilot project will deploy a 1 MW polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyser system patented by Oort, housed at UM6P’s research and development facility in OCP Jorf Lasfar, Morocco. The joint initiative will also focus on capacity building at UM6P to support the growth of a green hydrogen economy while assessing the feasibility of large-scale green hydrogen and ammonia production.
The green hydrogen sector has been gaining momentum globally as countries seek sustainable energy alternatives to combat climate change. The collaboration between Chariot Green Hydrogen, UM6P, and Oort Energy represents a significant step forward in Morocco’s journey towards becoming a key player in the green hydrogen economy. By testing the innovative electrolyser technology in an industrial setting, the partners aim to optimize the efficiency and durability of electrolysers, which are essential for cost-effective and scalable green hydrogen production.
Green hydrogen has emerged as a promising solution for decarbonizing energy-intensive sectors and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. With a focus on research, innovation, and capacity building, this partnership seeks to pave the way for a robust green hydrogen ecosystem in Morocco. The pilot project’s success will play a pivotal role in shaping future growth strategies and bolstering Morocco’s position in the global green hydrogen market.
UM6P’s active involvement in this collaboration highlights the institution’s commitment to fostering a sustainable future through cutting-edge research and development. The university’s research and development facility at OCP Jorf Lasfar will serve as a crucial hub for testing and refining green hydrogen technologies, driving the nation’s transition towards renewable energy sources.
The benefits of green hydrogen extend beyond decarbonization. As Morocco advances its green hydrogen capabilities, it will unlock new economic opportunities and attract foreign investments. The successful implementation of large-scale green hydrogen and ammonia production projects will further reinforce Morocco’s reputation as a forward-thinking nation committed to sustainable development.
The collaboration between Chariot Green Hydrogen, UM6P, and Oort Energy epitomizes the power of joint efforts in addressing global challenges like climate change. By combining their expertise, resources, and technology, these partners are poised to lead Morocco’s transformation towards a green hydrogen-driven future.
