In partnership with the government-run Korea Railroad Research Institute, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport was successful in creating a test vehicle for a hydrogen-powered electric train.
Since 2018, the two parties have been working on a project to create a hybrid propulsion system based on hydrogen fuel cells that permits train operation in a section without electric infrastructure.
The test vehicle was made locally by Woojin Industrial Systems, while the operational technology was created by Korea Railroad Corp., a government-run provider of train services.
The hydrogen-powered electric train has a smart energy management system in addition to a hybrid power system (1.2 megawatts) based on a hydrogen fuel cell and secondary cell.
The train can go more than 600 kilometres on a single charge and can reach a top operating speed of more than 110 km/h.
