Scotland’s clean energy initiatives are receiving a significant boost with the UK’s support for hydrogen projects.
Two key projects, one in Lanarkshire and another in Cromarty Firth, are set to receive funding to advance green hydrogen production. This move by the UK Government is part of a broader strategy to transition to a low-carbon economy by increasing green hydrogen’s production and usage.
The Whitelee project, led by ScottishPower, aims to use wind farm output to produce hydrogen. The inconsistency in wind energy production, due to weather dependency, poses a challenge. By converting excess wind energy into hydrogen, companies can store and transport the fuel more efficiently.
In Cromarty Firth, an initiative by ScottishPower will use wind energy to produce hydrogen for local industries. The fuel will potentially power whisky distilleries in the region. This project is part of a larger plan to establish hydrogen production hubs across northern Scotland, meeting industrial demands.
Industry Minister Sarah Jones emphasized the UK’s swift actions to support the net-zero infrastructure, ensuring hydrogen plays an integral role in Britain’s energy landscape. Offshore Energies UK acknowledged the contract awards as a crucial step towards a homegrown energy future, highlighting the hydrogen production business model as a foundation for low-carbon energy systems.
Despite the hydrogen contracts’ announcement, the SNP Government has not commented publicly. However, they previously recognized hydrogen’s importance in their Green Industrial Strategy, identifying it as a potential area for competitive economic development.
The Scottish Community Coalition on Energy has advocated for ambitious improvements to community benefit guidelines. It remains to be seen how responsive the government will be to these calls for a fairer deal in the energy transition.
