After receiving £27 million in finance from HYCAP, Hygen is prepared to launch its first clean hydrogen projects. In advance of a second round of funding anticipated for the second half of 2023, the funding will also enable Hygen to progress its pipeline of more than 300MW of projects around the UK.
Armstrong Capital Management and Jo Bamford have partnered to form HyGen. To help the UK achieve its net zero goals, the new corporation will construct, own, and manage commercial-scale hydrogen production facilities throughout the UK.
An ambitious low carbon hydrogen production and dispensing facility will be built in the center of Bradford by the gas distributor Northern Gas Networks (NGN) in collaboration with Hygen and Ryze Hydrogen, it was revealed last month.
In a joint venture with the two businesses, NGN, the gas distributor for the North East, Cumbria, and much of Yorkshire, is working on the project. The project will be constructed on Bowling Back Lane, a former NGN gas storage facility in the center of Bradford.
It will construct one of the largest low-carbon hydrogen production plants in the UK with the specific goal of using renewable energy to power a clean hydrogen electrolyzer.
In the near term, Hygen is focused on producing hydrogen for Ryze to deliver to the transportation sector because these projects qualify for subsidies under the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO), making them cost-competitive with diesel.
