Hynamics, a subsidiary of EDF’s green hydrogen company, and Menter Mon, an Anglesey social enterprise, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to advance the development of the Holyhead Hydrogen Hub in Wales.
The collaboration aims to expedite the green hydrogen project and secure significant capital investment for its implementation.
The Holyhead Hydrogen Hub, located at Parc Cybi in Holyhead, has obtained planning approval and is now seeking funding to progress to the next phase of development. The project’s objective is to produce renewable hydrogen on-site and distribute it as fuel for zero-emission hydrogen-powered vehicles, as well as for decarbonizing local marine transport bunkered in Holyhead.
Hydrogen infrastructure
Under the MoU, Hynamics and Menter Mon will work together to develop the hydrogen infrastructure at Holyhead. The partnership entails a six-month period dedicated to evaluating the project’s technical and economic feasibility. Additionally, negotiations will take place regarding financing the Hub, hydrogen sales, and operational agreements. The collaboration aligns with the Welsh and UK governments’ commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The signing of the MoU marks an important step towards a final investment decision that will support the construction of the Holyhead Hydrogen Hub. The project holds significant potential for economic and social benefits, enabling North Wales to become a frontrunner in green technology and promoting sustainable development.
Collaboration
Dafydd Gruffydd, Managing Director of Menter Mon, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, emphasizing their focus on sustainable development projects and the opportunity to showcase North Wales as a leader in the green technology sector.
Pierre de Raphelis-Soissan, Business Development Director of Hynamics, highlighted the collaboration’s value in combining Hynamics’ and EDF Group’s expertise in hydrogen solutions with Menter Mon’s unique capabilities in sustainable development. Together, they aim to establish a low-carbon energy system that supports the transition to a net-zero economy.
The collaboration between Hynamics and Menter Mon builds on EDF Renewables UK’s ongoing construction of the Porth Wen Solar Farm on Anglesey, demonstrating the commitment to renewable energy development in the region.
