Norwegian hydrogen bunkering expert HYON has signed a letter of intent (LOI) with compatriot cruise company Northern Xplorer to adopt its hydrogen fueling technology.

If Northern Xplorer makes a final investment decision (FID) and orders a shipyard for Multi Maritime’s zero-emission, energy-self-sufficient cruise vessel MM140, HYON will install its hydrogen fueling system.

The businesses will also design a safe, cost-effective Northern Xplorer fueling technique. HYOON said the LOI was signed on 18 January 2023 and is valid until the order is placed or terminated.

Northern Xplorer introduced the first hydrogen-powered zero-emission cruise ship idea in late 2021.

The company planned 14 ships with clean technology such fully electric propulsion, battery energy storage, hydrogen fuel cells, and auxiliary renewable energy supply (wind and solar power).

Northern Xplorer signed a LOI with Portuguese shipbuilder West Sea in 2022 to build its first emissions-free vessel. The ship should arrive around 2025/2026.

DNV will class the vessel and check its design and structures are in line with flag and international statutory requirements during building and commissioning to obtain and retain all relevant certificates for safe operations.
