Hyundai Doosan Infracore (HDI) hopes to begin mass-producing its internal hydrogen combustion engines by 2025 after finishing its development and creating its prototype.
An 11-liter hydrogen engine, which belongs to the new category of “H2 ICE” (Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine), can produce a power of 300 kW (402 horsepower), as well as a torque of 1700 Nm at 2000 revolutions per minute. Its manufacturer claims that it is between 25 and 30 percent more economical than a fuel cell-based system.
According to Kim Joong-so, Head of Motorization at HDI, “Our new hydrogen internal combustion engine is intended for commercial and long-haul vehicles (trucks, buses, construction equipment, etc.), as well as medium to large power generators.
Tests under actual circumstances
In the upcoming months, Hyundai Doosan Infracore intends to introduce its hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine prototype. The producer will then test it extensively in 2024 before mass-producing it the following year. The business will depend on its current technology and powertrain facilities to shorten the time to market and lower product prices.
In addition to its revolutionary hydrogen engine, HDI has also created plug-in hybrid powertrains and batteries for electric vehicles. ConExpo 2023, which will take place from March 14 to March 18 in Las Vegas, USA, will feature some of them.
