Hyzon Motors, a leading developer and supplier of hydrogen fuel cell technology and zero-emission heavy-duty fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), has announced the successful completion and factory acceptance testing of nine single-stack 200kW Fuel Cell System (FCS) B-samples.

This achievement signifies significant progress towards the commercial production of Hyzon’s innovative FCS, positioning the company to declare Start of Production (SOP) in 2024.

Hyzon’s accomplishment in testing the 200kW FCS B-samples in the first half of 2023 marks a crucial step forward in the development and production of hydrogen fuel cell technology. The successful completion of testing validates the design, equipment, and operating procedures, essential for the final tooling and production of C-samples and the eventual commercialization of the FCS. Hyzon’s commitment to accelerating the clean energy transition through hydrogen fuel cells is evident in this significant milestone.

Hyzon’s single-stack 200kW FCS sets itself apart from industry standards by achieving 200kW output from a single stack, while most suppliers couple two smaller FCS units to reach the same power output. This breakthrough results in notable improvements, including a ~20% increase in miles per kilogram of hydrogen compared to the 120kW FCS, enhancing the total cost ownership (TCO) for trucks. Additionally, the 200kW FCS offers a ~30% reduction in volume and weight, a 25% cost reduction, and requires less maintenance due to its simplified design.

The demand for hydrogen fuel cell systems is robust, especially considering the approximately 68 million diesel-powered vehicles worldwide that emit billions of tons of carbon annually. Governments, including the United States, have recognized the importance of transitioning to clean energy and have made significant commitments to the industry. Programs such as the Department of Energy’s Hydrogen Hub Program and the Inflation Reduction Act’s various initiatives demonstrate the government’s support for reducing emissions and promoting the adoption of zero-emission technologies.

With the successful completion of the 200kW FCS B-samples, Hyzon is well-positioned to increase its manufacturing rate by installing additional automation equipment. The standardization of design around the 200kW FCS powertrain components will further streamline production. The company expects to complete the remaining 16 B-samples and commence the production of C-samples in the second half of 2023. These advancements highlight Hyzon’s dedication to driving the commercialization of its single-stack design and contributing to a sustainable future.

Hyzon Motors’ successful completion and testing of the 200kW Fuel Cell System B-samples represent a significant milestone in the development of hydrogen fuel cell technology. The company’s breakthrough in achieving 200kW output from a single stack offers notable improvements in efficiency, cost, and maintenance. With the global demand for clean mobility solutions and the support of government initiatives, Hyzon is poised to play a pivotal role in advancing the adoption of zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles and accelerating the clean energy transition.
