The IMO’s Sub-Committee on Cargoes and Containers has approved draft interim standards aimed at providing worldwide standard provisions for ships deploying fuel cell power installations (CCC 7).

Fire systems and gas/vapour detection are among the topics included in the draft interim recommendations. The standards are designed to ensure that fuel cell technology delivers electrical and/or thermal energy in a safe and dependable manner.

The establishment of these interim rules for the safety of ships employing fuel cells is part of the Sub-crucial Committee’s work in the context of shipping’s requirement for alternative fuels and propulsion technologies to satisfy the Initial IMO GHG Strategy’s decarbonisation aspirations.
