The IMO claims to have made headway in formulating regulations for the use of hydrogen and ammonia as maritime fuel.

A communication group will work on developing guidelines for both fuels and reporting back to the 2023 session of the Sub-Committee.

It was reported by the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) that the IMO Working Group agreed that ammonia bunker rules should have a similar framework to the IGF Code as LNG does, but that ammonia had a significantly different risk profile.

As the maritime sector strives to decarbonize its operations, hydrogen and ammonia have emerged as promising future marine fuels.
