Shipping has been selected as a sector for pilot projects under India’s recently created National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), with New Delhi allocating an initial $2.5 million for a range of trailblazing initiatives that will include a look at the steel sector.

“Pilot projects will aid in the identification of operational problems and gaps related to the preparedness of existing technology, rules, implementation strategies, infrastructure, and supply chains. According to the new government mission, these will be crucial inputs for scaling up commercial deployment in the future.

The objective stated that by 2027, “The Shipping Corporation of India will equip at least two ships to run on green hydrogen or other green hydrogen-derived fuels or, in the event of its disinvestment, its successor private company.”

By 2027, India’s oil and gas corporations must charter at least one ship each that is powered by green hydrogen or fuels produced from it, and they must thereafter add one more hydrogen-powered ship every year after that.

By 2025, there will be at least one port with green ammonia bunkering facilities, and by 2035, all major ports will have them. India will attempt to manufacture its own electrolyzers and green hydrogen.
