Mitsui O.S.K. Lines launches ‘Hanaria,’ a novel hybrid passenger ship propelled by hydrogen and biodiesel in Kitakyushu. Hongawara Ship Yard built the ship for MOL Group’s MOTENA-Sea company, with investments from MOL Techno-Trade.
Hanaria is Japan’s pioneering passenger ship with a choice of propulsion energy sources. These include hydrogen fuel cells, lithium-ion batteries, and biodiesel fuel. Using these clean energy alternatives results in a greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction between 53% and 100% compared to similar fossil-fueled vessels.
Besides transportation, Hanaria’s first-floor passenger cabin, equipped with a large 98-inch monitor and projector, can serve as a venue for events, environmental education, and international conferences. Additionally, passengers on the second-floor cabins can enjoy cruising in the open air on the ship’s deck.
The diverse cruise routes provided include ‘Worship Cruise,’ ‘Kanmon Straits Cruise,’ and ‘Factory Night View Cruise,’ allowing passengers to explore heritage and landmarks.
The MOL Group includes environmental strategy as a critical component in its “BLUE ACTION 2035” management plan. As part of “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2”, net-zero GHG emissions are targeted by 2050, partly by incorporating clean fuels for ships and efficient operations.
