The Court of Appeal has dismissed opposition to the consent of Hiringa Energy and Ballance Agri-Nutrients’ Kapuni Green Hydrogen Project.
This groundbreaking initiative aims to remove the equivalent emissions of up to 30,000 cars annually, marking a crucial step towards a more sustainable and low-emission future for New Zealand.
The Kapuni Green Hydrogen Project, championed by Hiringa Energy, sets ambitious goals to displace fossil fuels in both transport and industrial feedstock. With a dedicated focus on building green hydrogen production and infrastructure, Hiringa aims to harness wind generation capacity of up to 24 MW to power an electrolyser. This industrial-scale electrolyser will produce green hydrogen, serving as feedstock for the Ballance plant to reduce its environmental footprint and as a zero-emission fuel for transportation.
The project’s emphasis on innovation and emissions reduction aligns with the broader goal of achieving a low-emissions future for electricity generation and cleaner vehicle fuel. The Kapuni Project stands as a testament to the innovative potential of the Taranaki region, showcasing the impact a growing startup like Hiringa Energy can have on the nation’s sustainable energy landscape.
The Court of Appeal’s decision is hailed as a tremendous relief by Hiringa Energy Chair Cathy Clennett, who expresses a commitment to working collaboratively with local iwi, hapu, and the community to realize the regional benefits of this low-emissions endeavor. The Kapuni Project’s potential impact extends beyond emissions reduction, offering economic and environmental benefits to Taranaki and New Zealand as a whole.
