KBR and Tractebel, part of ENGIE, have been awarded as the Owners Engineer for the Yuri project, a new renewable hydrogen factory in Western Australia’s Pilbara.

Yara Pilbara Fertilizers and electricity firm ENGIE are jointly developing the Yuri project. In Western Australia’s Pilbara region, on the Burrup Peninsula, near the ammonia plant owned by Yara, the firms intend to work together to create a green hydrogen facility that will integrate with it.

The Yuri project consists of a 10 MW electrolysis plant, an 18 MW solar photovoltaic farm, and an 8 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) that supplies the electrolysis with the energy it needs.

The plant will initially create up to 640 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually, serving as a carbon-free fuel for Yara’s current ammonia production unit. The Yuri project is expected to start producing in 2024.

The new facility will be essential to creating a “Pilbara Green Hydrogen Hub” and supporting the development of a new industry value chain that will capture renewable energy in Western Australia to manufacture green hydrogen.

The project, which is reported to be one of the first industrial-scale renewable hydrogen operations in the world, is partially supported by ARENA and is essential for Australia’s future sustainable energy environment.
