Kongsberg Maritime has signed a letter of intent with the Chinese shipbuilder Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore to deliver a large technology package to the BT-220IU Wind Turbine Installation Unit.
BT-220IU is to be designed for the Norwegian company OIM Wind, with a choice for another vessel of the same design. The vessel would be ideal for the transport and construction of several sets of next-and future-generation wind turbines and their foundations.
The Kongsberg Maritime Integrated Solution for Wind Turbine Installation Units is key to the cost-effective and environmentally friendly profile of the new vessel, which is scheduled to be launched by the end of 2022. This well-proven approach incorporates KM’s motion control, propulsion and dynamic positioning functions to preserve operability under all conditions.
Monitoring and tracking of the KM modules will be handled by the K-Chief 700 Marine Automation System, and the company’s scope of distribution will be complemented by a robust Digital Solution including a new planning, advisory, monitoring and reporting platform to enhance the safety and function of the vessel.
The Bergen LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) generators, along with the LNG Fuel Gas Supply System, are included in the distribution. KM’s new PM azimuth thrusters would guarantee optimized efficiency for both transit, maneuvering and complex positioning. The variety of supply also involves an array of suitable deck machines.
The electrical device will use KM’s Energy Storage Solution, a renewable, load-smoothing project that will maximize power generation and enable the vessel to run on battery power alone for limited periods of time. By allowing these zero-emission ranges to run, the solution eliminates the need for installed electricity and minimizes maintenance costs, and can decrease energy usage by up to 30 percent.
“OIM have been working closely with Kongsberg Maritime for many years, and we are very happy to include their advanced range of future-proof equipment and solutions into our units.
Oddgeir Indrestrand, OIM founder, president and chief executive.
“It’s a source of real pride for us to be such an integral part of the specification for this new wind turbine installation unit. The environmentally friendly principles which shape its design, construction and operation mirror our own ambitions to engender sustainability in offshore wind projects, and of course in all maritime sectors. Our technologies are a key element in achieving these green goals.”
