The Kraft Heinz Company has taken a significant step towards reducing its carbon footprint by partnering with Carlton Power to explore the development of a renewable green hydrogen plant at its Kitt Green manufacturing facility in Wigan, Greater Manchester.

The proposed 20MW Kitt Green hydrogen plant, the first of its kind to be undertaken by Kraft Heinz globally, aims to meet over 50% of the plant’s annual natural gas demand while cutting carbon emissions by 16,000 tons per year. By utilizing an electrolyser powered by renewable energy sources like wind and solar power, the project aligns with Kraft Heinz’s commitment to sustainability and its goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

The hydrogen production process will rely on advanced electrolysis technology, leveraging electricity generated from renewable sources to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. This green hydrogen will then be utilized within Kraft Heinz’s manufacturing operations, offering a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuel-based energy sources.

The development of the Kitt Green hydrogen plant holds the promise of significant environmental benefits, including a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a transition towards cleaner energy production.
