Penspen has been awarded a contract by Conexus Baltic Grid, the Latvian gas operator, to work on hydrogen blending.

Hydrogen blending is the process of mixing hydrogen with natural gas in existing pipelines. This approach aims to reduce carbon emissions and promote renewable energy use. By using existing infrastructure, hydrogen blending offers a cost-effective strategy for transitioning to greener energy sources. It can help bridge the gap while more extensive hydrogen networks and technologies are developed.

Penspen will provide a range of services, including engineering studies, safety assessments, and technical evaluations. Their expertise will ensure the safe and efficient blending of hydrogen into the existing gas network. This type of work requires specialized knowledge due to the different properties and behaviors of hydrogen compared to natural gas.

This collaboration between Penspen and Conexus Baltic Grid is significant for Latvia’s energy sector as it aligns with broader initiatives to increase renewable energy use and reduce carbon footprints. Hydrogen blending could lead to reduced reliance on fossil fuels and pave the way for a cleaner energy future in the region.
