Lhyfe has partnered with Elyse Energy, a specialist in low-carbon molecule production, to explore the development of e-methanol production in the Loire Estuary.

In November 2023, Lhyfe was selected as the winner of the Grand Port Maritime de Nantes Saint Nazaire’s call for expressions of interest, initiated in late 2022. The goal was to establish a green hydrogen production and distribution facility at the Montoir-de-Bretagne site. This site is pivotal for the port’s ambitions to decarbonize maritime transport. The partnership with Elyse Energy builds on this foundation, focusing on the production of e-methanol, a clean fuel derived from green hydrogen.

E-methanol is recognized as a promising alternative fuel that can significantly reduce carbon emissions in maritime transport. The fuel’s production from green hydrogen offers a sustainable solution to one of the most carbon-intensive sectors. This initiative aligns with the dual objective of achieving carbon neutrality and phasing out fossil fuels. The feasibility study will assess the technical, economic, financial, and regulatory aspects of the project, determining its viability.

Green hydrogen, produced through the electrolysis of water using renewable energy sources, is seen as a key enabler of the energy transition. It offers a zero-carbon alternative to fossil fuels and can be used to produce e-methanol. However, the production and scalability of green hydrogen remain challenging. Projects like the one proposed by Lhyfe and Elyse Energy are crucial in demonstrating the viability of green hydrogen in large-scale industrial applications.

The project’s success hinges on several factors, including the conclusions of the feasibility study, the acquisition of necessary operating and building permits, and securing financial investments. The feasibility study will play a crucial role in determining whether the project can proceed to the implementation phase. The involvement of the Grand Port Maritime de Nantes Saint Nazaire underscores the strategic importance of this initiative for the region’s industrial and logistics ecosystem.

The Lhyfe-Elyse Energy partnership represents a pioneering effort in the production of e-methanol from green hydrogen in France. If successful, this project could serve as a model for similar initiatives globally, driving the adoption of green hydrogen and low-carbon fuels in the maritime sector. The collaboration highlights the importance of cross-sector partnerships in advancing the hydrogen economy and achieving climate goals.
