Lhyfe has secured a substantial €149 million subsidy from the French government for its Green Horizon project. Announced on April 18, 2025, this deal marks the cornerstone of France’s National Hydrogen Strategy, seeking to position Normandy at the forefront of the decarbonization movement within Europe’s pivotal industrial corridors.

The project, a centerpiece of the European Commission’s Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) framework, is set to achieve a notable milestone: the deployment of over 100 MW in installed electrolysis capacity. Located near the Grand Canal du Havre, this ambitious site is projected to churn out 34 tonnes of green hydrogen daily, thus serving as a crucial decarbonization node for the region’s industrial and transportation sectors. This development is particularly critical given the strategic importance of Normandy as one of Europe’s largest industrial port areas.

Data released by the French industry ministry outlines an operational timeline targeting completion by 2029. Funding detailed in the Bpifrance contract highlights a phased disbursement structured around milestone achievements, with an €18 million advance anticipated by June 2025. This tranche system not only ensures fiscal responsibility but also aligns investments with verifiable project progress, safeguarding public resources while promoting industrial innovation.

The significance of Lhyfe’s new venture cannot be overstated. By situating production at Gonfreville-l’Orcher, the project underpins France’s strategy to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, in harmony with the Paris Agreement’s emission reduction aspirations. Such ventures are paramount as Europe pushes to achieve a more diversified and renewable energy mix alongside direct electrification efforts.

From an operational standpoint, Lhyfe’s commitment to innovations such as seawater-based hydrogen production and integration with renewable wind energy positions it competitively on the cutting edge of clean-tech applications. The firm’s ongoing endeavors across eight European nations, with over 470 hydrogen deliveries in 2024 alone, showcase how sustained investment in technological offerings can propel industry-wide adoption.

CEO Matthieu Guesné’s remarks spotlight the importance of these efforts, indicating that securing the grant not only validates Lhyfe’s technological vision but also galvanizes its capability to partner with esteemed international actors in the energy domain. The financial backing serves as an unequivocal endorsement from both national and European bodies, steadfast in their support for scalable decarbonization solutions.

The funding also stresses the vital role SMEs like Lhyfe play in evolving the hydrogen paradigm from nascent technology to a mainstream industry solution. Their dexterity in navigating intricate technological landscapes and achieving rapid commercialization could set a standard for future enterprises aspiring to spearhead similar ventures.
